Khajistan Launches Khajistan Digital Archive

by Saad Khan

I’ve always thought words can be oppressive. I’ve never preferred talking in them (I can if I want to, but I rarely want to). An image, on the other hand, honors the seer’s agency to make meaning out of it. And I believe that’s how life should be—we should all have the freedom to make meaning of the world around us in ways that feel true to us. That meaning-making should be playful. It should be play.

At its core, Khajistan is a gaze—with play at its heart. It’s unimpressed by globalist aesthetics and filled with visuals that hold real meaning for many. Yet these visuals go unushered into the rapidly shifting ways we see and make sense of the larger world—and our own mini inner worlds. Khajistan Digital Archive is my latest gift to the world of the visual. Not long ago, our lived experiences were fully ignored by a globalized, Westernized infotech machine—designed to market "cool" lifestyles to a select few.

Things shifted especially with platforms like TikTok, a bloated and repurposed iteration of earlier Chinese apps that rival Western tech giants. But even as we share visuals in bulk on the internet like never before, much of it remains unsaved and ephemeral. And from what I know, being where I’m from, we quickly forget the many ways we’ve lived, bending to the mood swings of those in power.

The Khajistan Digital Archive preserves how we have lived, how we live now, and ensures we never feel unseen. Most importantly, it’s a place to play. - Saad Khan

Selections from archive.khajistan.com, showcasing over 65,000 images and videos from regional social media platforms.

The Khajistan Digital Archive is a living record of our lives—our humor, struggles, and inner worlds—ensuring they aren’t rendered unintelligible by the narratives of the loud and powerful. Dive into thousands of memes, images, and videos from my stash (since 2014) and rare gems from fellow archivists across the region—all on the Khajistan Digital Archive.

Sign up, save, and explore: track when a pic first appeared online with built-in Google Lens feature, dive into meta-digital worlds with 'search image on the internet,' and play. Meaning is ours to make through the images that break through the lies imposed by imperial tongues. We should have the freedom to engage in our shared reality, recognizing that real spaces—both physical and online—exist for participation, not just observation.
