The film

Javaid’s family makes counterfeit shampoo in Lahore’s informal economy. He wants out, through show business, through militancy in Kashmir, through anything that might lift him clear of his class. The film is set during an upper-class celebration and takes in aspiration, American influence and the trade in branded goods.

It is one of three telefilms Khajistan licensed from Turun Talky, the production company the two filmmakers set up and later closed, alongside World Ka Center (2002) and Kali Shalwar (2007). All three were made during the private-television opening of the Musharraf years, aired briefly, and were digitised and subtitled from the original DV tapes.

After tomorrow

Office Hours continue on Saturday, October 17, 2 to 5 PM, with no registration required. The session closes on Saturday, October 24, 1 to 5 PM, with Portal Test: Day Two and a closing party. Details of the full run are in Khajistan Portal Opens at Recess, Brooklyn and on the Recess project page.
