1. Millet-i Israiliye
Ebüzziya Tevfik | Istanbul: Matbaa-i Ebüzziya | Ottoman Turkish | 1305 (1887 to 1888), first edition
An early example of antisemitic writing in Ottoman Turkish, presented as a history of the Jewish people.
Historical context
Ebüzziya Tevfik wrote within an Ottoman debate about religion, citizenship and commerce while drawing on European anti-Jewish stereotypes. His account combines hostile generalizations about Jewish economic life with passages praising Jewish loyalty, and with a conversation with a French Jewish bookseller in Istanbul that, in a 2019 study’s reading, embarrassed him about his own religious framing. The same study places the book’s European influences alongside older religious hostility and economic rivalry within Ottoman society.
