354 Issues of Karikator Magazine (1972-1980, Iran)
Karikator Magazine (1972-1980) was a Tehran-based satirical periodical that critiqued Iran’s post-revolutionary social and political tensions through provocative cartoons. Known for its bold visual commentary on topics like bureaucracy, censorship, and international relations, it became a rare outlet for dissent during a period of strict media controls. Despite its popularity, the magazine faced repeated state censorship for mocking clerical authority and government policies. It was permanently shuttered in 1992 after publishing caricatures deemed “anti-revolutionary,” with its editors detained and its archives confiscated. Today, surviving copies are preserved in collections like the Iranian Artists’ Forum as artifacts of dissident art under the Islamic Republic and at Khajistan Toshakhana..
