Behlol Magazine Cartoon “Cleric’s Thumbs-Up” (1970s) — Metal Panel
This reproduction preserves a satirical Behlol magazine cartoon from the 1970s that skewers clerical authority in post-revolution Iran. Rendered in Behlol’s signature caricature style, a smiling mullah stands before a gilded gate flanked by lion statues, giving a colossal thumbs-up. To his left, a line of priests and seminarians look on eagerly, while to his right a row of ordinary men is sent flying backward by the sheer force of his endorsement. Though there is no written caption, the imagery mocks how a single clerical blessing—or “thumbs-up”—could overpower public opinion and sweep aside independent voices.
