Behlol Magazine Cold War Era Cartoon (1970s) — Metal Panel
This reproduction preserves a satirical 1970s cartoon from Behlol magazine, mocking Cold War meddling in Iran’s economy. Rendered in bold watercolor caricature, Uncle Sam (left) and a Soviet commissar (right) grin as they point toward a stylized bazaar (“بازار”) gateway. The Persian speech bubble atop reads, “اگر این بازار و هیئت… بازار ما چه داغ میشود!!” (“If this bazaar and the Heiat… our bazaar will become scorching hot!!”), wryly warning that U.S. and Soviet influence—together with Iran’s own political factions (“هیئت,” or religious committees)—threatens to overheat local commerce. Published by Behlol, this piece satirizes how superpower competition and internal power brokers risk destabilizing Iran’s traditional markets
