1980s American-Funded Afghan Anti-Communist Propaganda Metal Panel: Sag-e Zanjirī (سگ زنجيري; “Chained Dog”)
This metal panel reproduces a 1980s poster produced by Abdul Rasūl Sayyaf’s Ittihad-e Islami Afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan War. It depicts a snarling chained dog, its tongue forming a chain of hammer and sickles to portray the Kabul regime as a Soviet puppet. The Dari headline reads سگ زنجيري (Sag-e Zanjirī, “Chained Dog”) and Roman text names the publisher. The dog is a generic caricature of all Soviet-aligned Afghan communists rather than any one leader. The image also reflects U.S. covert backing under CIA Operation Cyclone (1979–1989), which funneled weapons, training, and funds through Pakistan’s ISI to mujahideen factions including Sayyaf’s, helping generate anti-Marxist propaganda.
