Originally produced as part of a French colonial postcard series titled “Scènes et Types”, this tinted photograph depicts a young Moroccan Jewish woman reclining indoors with a tea service tray. Part ethnographic document and part orientalist fantasy, images like this circulated widely in colonial Europe under the guise of educational souvenirs. Today, they offer a conflicted yet valuable window into the gendered and racialized visual economies of empire. This particular reprint is framed for exhibition as a way of reclaiming and reframing such imagery through a contemporary, critical lens.
Exhibited in “Spasial Program” at SculptureCenter, New York, June 18 –July 28, 2025.
