Karachi, After Midnight: VOLUME 1 & 2 — COMPLETE EDITIONS
Karachi, After Midnight: Volumes 1 and 2 – Complete Two-Book Set
This two-volume set brings together Shams’s complete entries from 2003 and 2004, preserving the writing of a young gay man documenting his life in Karachi during the early years of the internet in Pakistan.
Volume 1 compiles all of Shams’s 2003 entries, including Counting Traffic, Storm Season, and City Electric. He writes of Karachi’s everyday frictions: counting traffic, fighting with his mother, watching men from car windows, and learning what it means to desire in public while needing to remain safe. Unedited and raw, this volume preserves his writing from January to December 2003.
Volume 2 compiles all three parts of the following year: Becoming Gay, Tehzeeb-ul-Ikhlaq Chowk, and Flowers of Separation. Shams drives through Clifton and Defence, lingers at traffic signals, moves through chatrooms, offices, Ramadan hunger, political noise, illness, funerals, depression, and dangerous moments of recognition. Desire remains present, but the risks deepen.
Across both volumes, Shams writes with humor, longing, panic, boredom, tenderness, and sudden flashes of beauty. A stranger on the street, a room perfectly arranged, a spontaneous “good job” to Allah for making men beautiful: the ordinary city becomes a record of fear, gratitude, and survival.
Karachi, After Midnight is the record of a life: funny, searching, often heartbreaking, always real.
