22 Issues of Bint-Al-Nile (1950s, Egypt)
Bint al-Nile, established by Doria Shafik in 1945 in Cairo, was a pioneering feminist magazine advocating for women's rights in Egypt. Shafik, a prominent journalist and women's rights activist, used the publication to address issues like women's suffrage, abolition of polygamy, and opposition to forced marriages. Her bold editorials often clashed with conservative views, leading to the magazine's ban in 1957 for criticizing President Gamal Abdel Nasser.
In 1948, Shafik expanded the magazine's influence by founding the Bint al-Nile Union, which championed women's political and social rights. The union organized literacy programs and notable protests, including a 1951 demonstration at the Egyptian Parliament for women's suffrage and equal rights.
