Published during the 24th Zionist Congress, held in Jerusalem in 1956, this album records delegates through caricature rather than formal portraiture. Buchwald’s drawings include figures from Israel, the United States, South Africa, France, Uruguay, Australia, Mexico, Brazil, and other Zionist communities, reflecting the international makeup of the Congress and the post-1948 structure of Zionist political organizing.
The album functions as both a Congress souvenir and a political visual document of Israeli and diaspora Zionist culture in the mid-1950s. While not state propaganda, it carries a clear ideological and commemorative purpose, presenting the 24th Zionist Congress as a major event in the life of Israel and the global Jewish diaspora. Buchwald’s caricatures compress public identity, personality, national affiliation, and political presence into quick black-line portraits, making the album a rare visual record of Zionist institutional culture after 1948.
