Rare Hebrew and Yiddish political cartoon book published just after World War II, collecting satirical drawings from 1939 to 1945. Bound in a blue hardcover with gilt lettering, גאט לאכט or גאָט לאַכט (God Laughs) records Jewish political feeling at the moment of catastrophe, liberation, displacement, and unresolved return.

The cartoons address Nazism, the camps, Dachau, refugees, Palestine, Zionism, British policy, and postwar Europe’s broken promises. Biblical and holiday imagery, including a Passover 1945 Haggadah cartoon, connects the destruction of European Jewry to older Jewish languages of exile, bondage, survival, and redemption.

This is not simply a war chronicle. It is a Jewish book of bitter laughter under pressure. Its humor is wounded, documentary, and political, placing God, Europe, the Allies, the British Mandate, and Jewish fate itself under satirical judgment.

A scarce artifact of Jewish anti-fascist and postwar political print culture from the end of World War II, preserving the immediacy of Jewish responses to fascism, liberation, statelessness, Palestine, and the Holocaust while the future of Jewish life remained unresolved.
