Rare Hebrew and Yiddish political cartoon book published just after World War II, collecting satirical drawings from 1939 to 1945. Bound in a blue hardcover with gilt lettering, גאט לאכט or גָאט לַאכט (God Laughs) records Jewish political feeling at the moment of catastrophe, liberation, displacement, and unresolved return.

The cartoons address Nazism, the camps, Dachau, refugees, Palestine, Zionism, British policy, and postwar Europe’s broken promises. Biblical and holiday imagery, including a Passover 1945 Haggadah cartoon, connects the destruction of European Jewry to older Jewish languages of exile, bondage, survival, and redemption.
