Keshet: Hebrew Children’s Calendar and Nation-Building Reader, Palestine, c. 1940s
An illustrated Hebrew children’s annual published by Massada in Tel Aviv, organized around the Hebrew calendar year. The volume combines poems, songs, short stories, riddles, dialogues, holiday lessons, and educational activities with vivid color plates for the months and festivals, including Tishrei, Kislev, Shevat, Adar, Nisan, Tammuz, and Av. Its imagery links Jewish ritual life with nature, agricultural labor, Hebrew language formation, and early Zionist civic education. Ilustrated in part by Nahum Gutman, a foundational figure in Israeli children’s book illustration, the book is a scarce example of Hebrew children’s publishing from the late 1940s to early 1950s, spanning the end of British Mandate Palestine and the early State of Israel.
