    Original double-sided U.S. psychological operations leaflet produced during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Printed in Dari and Pashto, the leaflet frames the Taliban and al-Qaeda as the source of civilian suffering and urges the surrender of Taliban and al-Qaeda members to coalition forces.

    Provenance:  Surplus copy retained outside field distribution. Acquired from the personal materials of an unnamed U.S. military servicemember. Never airdropped or field-distributed.

    Translation:
    Front: “The Taliban and al-Qaeda bring pain and suffering to Afghanistan.”
    Back: “Hand over the Taliban and al-Qaeda members to the coalition forces.”

    Objective:
    To encourage Afghan civilians to associate the Taliban and al-Qaeda with suffering in Afghanistan, and to promote the surrender or reporting of Taliban and al-Qaeda personnel to coalition forces.

    Imagery:
    The front shows a distressed woman in a burqa or head covering in a stark, cold-toned setting. The reverse shows a bearded armed fighter holding a machine gun, identifying Taliban or al-Qaeda combatants as the subject of the surrender message.
