Printed poster for the 1973 Egyptian political thriller Zāʾir al-Fajr (Visitor at Dawn), directed by Moudy Shaker and starring Magda El-Khatib and Ezzat El Alaili. Banned shortly after release, the film critiques authoritarianism and state violence in post-Nasser Egypt through the story of a journalist investigating a young man’s death in police custody. A haunting image of Magda El-Khatib’s distressed face—abstracted in red, black, white, and blue—dominates the composition, visually echoing themes of repression and fragmented truth. Now a cult classic, the film has been re-evaluated as one of the boldest critiques of Egypt’s security state in 1970s cinema.

Exhibited in “Spasial Program” at SculptureCenter, New York, June 18 –July 28, 2025.
